Next step in the evolution of recreation service delivery
The Town of Cochrane and Rocky View County have formalized a new partnership with YMCA Calgary to manage and operate the Spray Lake Sawmills Centre (SLSC). This milestone marks a significant step forward in ensuring the continued delivery of high-quality, sustainable, and accessible recreation services for residents in Cochrane and the surrounding region.
The decision follows a joint Request for Proposal (RFP) process launched in 2024 to explore new operating models that better reflect the region’s rapid growth and changing recreational needs. YMCA Calgary, with over 123 years of experience and a proven track record managing multi-use recreation facilities, was selected as the preferred operator.
A community-first model
YMCA Calgary operates with a community-first philosophy and extensive experience managing recreation centres in partnership with municipalities. YMCA Calgary is uniquely positioned to support the current operator with a smooth transition and build on the existing strengths of the SLS Centre in service to the community.
This partnership supports a long-term, sustainable model for operations, service continuity and future growth.
Appreciation for a strong foundation
This new chapter is possible because of the efforts of the SLS Centre’s current Board of Directors, leadership team and dedicated staff. Their commitment has shaped the Centre into a vibrant hub of health, wellness and community connection.
We are committed to getting to know the teams and to ensuring that SLS Centre staff, members, partners and user groups are engaged and supported throughout the transition process.
What’s next?
- May 2025: Staff, board, member, tenant, sports groups, user groups and other stakeholder updates underway
